This is a young acquisition of the Swedish stoner rock community. The early beginnings of the band however go back to 1997 when guitarist Morgan Zocek met a drummer (Tor Pentèn – he left the band in 2003) in a club in Stockholm who shared the same musical vision. This meant bluesy hard rock of bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Cult and Kyuss. Next years were spent with finding the right co-musicians, writing songs and recording a few demos.
Early 2002 their first album ‘Trying To Burn The Sun’ was released by the Italian label Beard Of Stars/Vinyl Magic. Only later new bass player Martin Karlsson joined the band, a good move because he owed an authentic Hammond organ and he could sing too. The switch behind the drums only happened in 2003. With this new line-up they started working at a sophomore album which got them a deal with Belgian Buzzville label. ‘The Newborn Sun’ is available since March and it is a record they can be proud of.

We can enjoy the characteristic hearty vintage sound which is typical for stoner rock. Vocals of Jani Kataja are full of emotions, sometimes a bit hoarse or somewhat rough. He follows the atmosphere of the music without any problems. Opener ‘I Am A King’ is a strong rocking manifest in which extensive guitar soloing creates a slightly psychedelic frame with all kinds of effects. In the seventies rock of ‘Sweet Wine’ vocals remind me a lot of Lars Eric Si of Honcho. A similar blues feel. ‘When The Day Dies’ takes the eye on the score of its folksy character, but the kind of folk we remember of Led Zeppelin at their first albums.

A true highlight is the nearly ten minutes long ‘A Piece Of Shade’ which is tributary to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin by its steady rock with groovy guitars, but relished with overtones of their own. Excellent is the calm passage with beautiful relax guitar runs, where after the song returns to its original raw fibre.

The following track that moves me is ‘Another Day In The Blue’, once again sung in a calm way with sensitive guitar licks. To occlude there are two steamy songs to whoop it up. Lots of groove and proper rock with obvious Kyuss influences in the instrumental wanderings, but also an important function of Hammond organ in ‘The Sun Will Love You’.

The band summarizes everything in the nine minutes long ‘Riding The Rainbow’ that finalizes this “with love for the seventies” made album in a jam session alike manner. With ‘The Newborn Sun’ Sideburn will surely become a name in the stoner rock scene. Now a tour is needed to win more souls.
